NELSON - TRAFALAGAR


The Battle of Trafalgar was a decisive turning point in the war with the French and her allies, fought off Cape Trafalgar the battle took place on 21 October 1805. It proved to be one of the most decisive battles ever fought at sea destroying the combined fleets of France and Spain commanded by Admiral Villeneuve, Nelsons victory ended Napoleons vision of invadeing Britain and set the Royal Navy to be the worlds maritime power for over one hundred years.

Victory at Trafalgar came at a high price. Nelson was mortaly wounded by a bullet fired from a sharp shooter aloft in the in the rigging of the French ship Redoubtable.

 

A NATIONAL HERO REMEMBERED


Nelson was and still is a national hero. Newspapers published details of his courage, his victories at sea and his romance with the Lady Emma Hamiltion which was not recieved with favour in all parts of society.

The people of Britain and indeed Europe produced a flood of 'Nelsonmemorabilia' which meant that his image appeared on all types of commemoratives imaginable. These items today are very much sought after and collectable.
