THE NAPOLEONIC ERA

The Napoleonic was an era of many contrasts, the Napoleonic wars were a titanic struggle, like so many of Britain's major conflicts began badly, with only a few shafts of light to brighten the gloom. Lasting for well over twenty years, they called for the very best in British character, especially doggedness and self-belief. This era was also the age of tremendous change: by the end of the eighteenth century the British ruled a huge and strong empire. Cheap raw materials, such as cotton and sugar, flooded into finished goods, new farming methods were used to produce more food for growing population. All this brought a startling change to the British landscape. The old open fields were enclosed with walls and hedges.

Coalmines, iron foundries and canals were cut into the countryside. New roads were built, and new towns began to grow up as people came to work in the factories. The wealthy built great opulent mansions with exuberant furnishings and objects of art created by the master craftsmen and women of the day.

Here at Emma Hart in addition to the Napoleonic era we also have a selection of interesting items of later periods to include campaign furniture, marine antiques / artifacts, antique maps, engravings and prints of all interests and objects of art.
